French Square

This square does contain puff stitches, which can be intimidating if you’ve never done them, but they are very easy to do. I do recommend watching you tension though, as it is very easy to make them to tight or to loose.

Double Crochet Square

The Double Crochet Square is great if you want to make a square that don’t have a lot of holes in it, the way the Traditional Granny Square does. This one is also a good one to just keep repeating the rows until it gets to the size that you want without having to make multiple squares to piece together. Each round after round 2 increases by 4 stitches

Base Ring: Chain 4, join with slip stitch

Round 1: Ch5 (count as 1dc, ch2), [3dc into the ring, ch2] 3 times, 2dc into ring. slip st to 3rd of ch-5

Round 2: Slip st into next sp, chain 7 (counts as 1dc, ch4) *2dc into same sp, 1dc into each dc across the side of square**, 2dc into next sp, ch4; repeat from * twice more and from * to ** again, 1 dc in same space as ch-7, slip st to 3rd of ch-7. {4 groups of 7dc}

Round 3: Repeat as Round 2. { 4 groups of 11dc}

Round 4: Repeat as Round 2. {4 groups of 15dc}

The Traditional Granny Square

The traditional granny square, something I think every crocheter has done at least once. This pattern only goes 4 rounds, but this is one pattern that you can repeat over and over again to get the size that you want. The overall gauge (size) really is up to you, it all just depends on what size hook and the type of yarn that you use.

Abbreviations you’ll need to know:

Dc: double crochet

Ch: Chain

Base ring: Chain 4, then join to first stich with a slip stitch

Round 1: Chain 5 (this counts as 1 dc, ch 2). 3dc into the ring, ch2. Repeat 2 times. 2dc into the ring, slip stitch in the 3rd stitch of the ch5

Round 2:  (This round makes the corners) Slip Stitch into the next space. Ch5 (this counts as 1dc, ch2). 3dc in the same space, ch1, skip 3dc. Into the next space 3dc, ch2, 3dc. Ch1, skip 3dc and then 3dc, ch2, 3dc into the next space. Repeat for the next space. Ch1 2dc in the starting space, slip stich into 3rd stitch of ch5

Round 3: Slip stitch into the next space. Ch5 (counts as 1dc, ch2) 3dc into the same space. * Ch1, skip 3dc. 3dc into the next space, ch1. Skip 3dc*, 3dc,ch2,3dc into the next space. Repeat from *to *twice more. Ch1, skip 3dc. 3dc into next space, ch1. 2dc into starting space, slip stitch into 3 stich on ch5

Round 4: Slip Stitch into the next space. Ch5 (counts as 1dc, ch2) 3dc into same space. *{ch1, skip 3dc, 3dc into the next space.} twice, ch1 skip 3dc* 3dc, ch2, 3dc in the next space; repeat from * twice more. Ch1, skip ch3, 3dc, ch1 into the next 2 spaces. 2dc into starting space. Slip stitch into the 3rd stitch of the ch5.

The Crochet Square Series

Over the next 5 weeks, starting Monday, I will be posting a crochet square pattern every Monday through Friday. There will be 20 squares in total. The list of square I’ll be featuring is still being decided.

Each post will contain the written pattern and a crochet diagram. I will also add a photo of the completed square as I get one made. There will also be a video available on how to make said square on my YouTube channel starting in March. The video link will be posted into the blog as it becomes available on YouTube.
