So back in 2020 I wrote a really, really basic post on the tools of crochet. I was just starting out writing about crochet then, and I was still really nervous about writing really long posts. If you’d like to read it, click here.
While the tools haven’t changed that much since 2020, there have been changes and new tools introduced.
1. Crochet Hook:
- Purpose: The main tool for crochet, used to pull yarn through loops.
- Varieties:
- Available in different sizes, typically ranging from 2 mm to 15 mm.
- Made from various materials like aluminum, steel, plastic, wood, or bamboo.
- Tunisian crochet hooks, which are longer and sometimes come with a cable.

2. Yarn:
- Purpose: The material used to create crochet projects.
- Varieties:
3. Stitch Markers:
- Purpose: Used to mark important points in your project, like the beginning of a round or a specific stitch.
- Types: Locking stitch markers, split-ring stitch markers, or even small safety pins.
4. Tapestry Needle / Yarn Needle:
- Purpose: Used for weaving in yarn ends or seaming pieces together.
- Material: Often made of plastic or metal, with a large eye for threading yarn.
5. Scissors:
- Purpose: To cut yarn cleanly and efficiently.
- Types: Small, sharp scissors are preferred for precision.
6. Measuring Tape:
- Purpose: To check gauge or measure the length of your crochet project.
- Flexible Types: Are often used to measure curved or flexible projects.
7. Row Counter:
- Purpose: Helps keep track of the number of rows or rounds worked in a project.
- Types: Can be digital, mechanical, or manual.
8. Yarn Bobbins:
- Purpose: Used to hold smaller amounts of yarn when working with multiple colors or intarsia crochet.
9. Blocking Mats and Pins:
- Purpose: Used to shape and stretch crochet pieces to the correct dimensions after completion.
- Materials: Foam mats and rust-proof pins are typically used.
10. Project Bag:
- Purpose: Used to store your yarn, hooks, and works in progress (WIPs).
11. Hook Organizer:
- Purpose: A case or roll-up bag to store and organize crochet hooks of various sizes.
12. Yarn Swift and Ball Winder:
- Purpose: A yarn swift holds the yarn while it’s wound into a ball using the ball winder, making it easier to work from.
